Murano is located off the shore of Venice, Italy. Murano has been a commercial port as far as the 7th century. Murano glass is a well-known product of the Venetian Island of Murano. The city had become famous for its glassmakers in the 10th century. It is believed that the process of glassmaking in Murano is rather intricate. Murano glass art is made using the lampworking procedure. The glass is made from silica which turns into liquid when heated. Murano glass passes from liquid to solid state, therefore there is a phase wherein the glass is soft before it hardens fully, allowing the artisan to form the material. Murano has become the center for glassmaking in the Venetian Republic. Murano glass is still intertwined with Venetian glass. The Murano glass today is considered one of the popular materials in jewellery making. The oldest glass factory is Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso, which was established in 1854.

Murano glass jewellery showcases the various kinds of necklaces, bracelets, pendants, earrings, and other decorative materials. Murano glass sculptures include a set of signature glass pieces signed by the artist and ornamental centerpieces for home and office use. Murano glass is also used in chandelier making and table lamps.

Murano glass sculptures include unique artwork designed and signed by the artist himself. Others are decorative glass pieces like flower vase, candlestick, figurines, bowls, plates, and other decorative products.

Murano glass jewelleries include bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and other glass beads. All handmade and original employing the skills called Muranese Artistic Skills.

Murano glass lightings include chandeliers, pendant lamps, table lamps, sconces, and others - all imported and factory-direct from Italy. Chandeliers made of Murano glass are the highest quality and high-end type of lighting fixtures. All are hand-crafted and available in different shapes and colors. Lightings come in a variety of style – classic and contemporary.

How do I care for Murano glass?

Anything which is made of Murano glass is fairly maintenance free, as it only requires dusting and wiping so that the stubborn marks will be removed. Wipe it using a moistened lint-free rag. For kitchen wares such as dishes and glasses must be hand washed only in warm water with a mild soap. Refrain from exposing it to full sunlight as the color will fade.

What if I chip my Murano glass?

It’s inevitable, and that really happens. Have it repaired immediately by a specialist so that the crevice won’t grow.

Gemstone in Australia can be found in the more accessible regions of Australia. Eye-catching gemstones, from emeralds and rubies to sapphires, can add a great spark of colour to any jewellery collection. Furthermore, gemstones in Australia can be an awesome gift from birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions.

How to choose a good gemstone in Australia?

Basically, there are three most recognised gemstones in Australia: emeralds, rubies, sapphires. They all have mineral traces or inclusions. Nevertheless, the jewellery industry in Australia still considers other gems desirable by some people. Emerald shades, let’s say for an instance range from yellow-green to blue-green. The most priceless emerald stones are pure green. Emerald is also the one of the most well-known gemstones in Australia. In fact, emeralds give a big contribution to the art of carvings and inscriptions because of their natural composition. On the other, ruby shades range between orange-red and purple-red and have also been considered the most precious gemstones in Australia. Actually rubies represent July birthdays and are also the anniversary gemstone of the 15th and 40th year of marriage. Lastly, sapphire shades range from blue-green to blue-purple, however sapphire also come in many other colours such as yellow, black, orange, pink, white, or sometimes colourless. Sapphires are basically the birthstones for the month of September, and of course the anniversary gemstone for the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries.

Popular gemstones in Australia like emeralds and rubies are commonly treated with oils and resins. If they are exposed in too much heat, it can cause them to break down, and this will require professional repairs. On the other hand, rubies and sapphires are normally treated with heat, and this method develops colour without changing the structure of the stone. Gemstones in Australia can be usually treated with cobalt, beryllium or other elements, and this process is what we call ‘diffusion treatment’. Take note that the scratch can possibly reveal the lighter hue underneath.

How to evaluate the colour of the gemstones?

Unlike diamonds, some gemstones in Australia have different densities. Fortunately, the lighter weight gem may be more precious and costly than a heavier gem. In evaluating the colour of gemstones, be guided with the following:

-          Hue: it refers to the color of the gemstone

-          Tone: it refers to the depth of a gemstone colour, from colourless to black

-          Saturation: it refers to the purity of the colour of the gemstone

A friendship bracelet is usually given to by a person to another as a mark of friendship. Friendship bracelets are often handmade, usually of embroidered floss or thread. They have a variety of designs, patterns, and style. The amount of thread used in bracelets varies depending on the pattern and style. For instance, you need two strings if you want to make a small pattern with a double chain knot.

Have you ever made a special friendship bracelet for your friend before? You think friendship bracelets are cool and awesome, so why not make it. A self-crafted friendship bracelet is a lot more unique and remarkable than the friendship bracelets we see in the stores. Yes, it will also hone your creativity and imagination.

Friendship bracelets, in fact, became very famous in the United States during 1970s, and were generally worn by teenagers. Then, the popularity grew until it spread into the whole world. So, it’s good to know the origin of your favorite friendship bracelets you are wearing now. Below are the usual patterns and designs of friendship bracelets:

  • Alpha bracelets (with letters/symbols)
  •  Angels
  • Basic diagonal stripe
  • Candy stripes
  • Diamond
  • Double chain knot
  • Egyptian style
  • Hearts
  • Knitted
  • Rag rug
  • Swirl and braids
  •  Zig zag

Now, you’re wondering how you can make a fantastic friendship bracelet on your own. Here’s how:

  1. You will need an embroidery thread, that’s the main material in making a friendship bracelet. Remember that embroidery floss is thicker than normal sewing thread, and comes in various and wonderful colors. To create a striped effect, you should have more than one color because the more colors you choose, the wider and colorful the bracelet will be.
  2. Now, choose a good color that you love. Take the first color thread and make the length a little bigger than the distance from your fingertip to your shoulder. Cut it.
  3. Cut a piece this length from each of the other colors. In order for you to make a good friendship bracelet, you need at least 3 strings or as many as you want. Keep in mind that when you use 4-6 different colors of embroidery thread, it will yield to a thin bracelet. If 8-10 strings, it makes the bracelet thicker.

There you go, you can possible create a good friendship bracelet on your, and make your friends delighted.

Pearls measuring larger than 12.0mm are often bought as dangle earrings in order to reduce the weight of these gems on the earlobe.

Just keep in mind that pure and high-quality pearl earrings have very sharp, highly reflective luster. Moreover, the shape should be perfectly round like in the case of Akoya, South Sea or round Tahitian pearls. It has ‘A’ that denotes quality and durability.

AA+ quality pearl earrings must have luster that is just about equivalent to AAA, and the blemish rate will allow for up to a single blemish not visible from the front of the pearl.

They say it's a fine line between madness and genius and I confess that this weeks effort was more madness than genius. Part of the look of Lx Jewellery is everything is based around the theme of boldness, beauty and its bespoke qualities. I can tell straight away if a component is or isn't right for me. You don't see any chain here nor do you trendy random looks.
We do go mad for pearls, gemstones and venetian glass which fit into our style. I aim to produce suites or stories of our gemstones so that bracelets, earrings and necklaces can be worn together or separately. Normally this means a statement necklace, a coordinating bracelet and 2 pairs of earrings, a dramatic pair normally worn with the bracelet and a more discrete pair to go with the necklace if you choose. Some can wear dramatic earrings and necklaces in one hit, others may wish to highlight one or the other.
Our designs are meticulous. When working with necklaces, it is a curve I design to as the neck is obviously not a flat surface and that is why our necklaces always sit perfectly. There is a lot of maths involved in gauging the perfect drape and fall of necklace let alone the artistic nature.
Bracelets have their own challenges because the wrist is small, normally a necklace design will not automatically translate to a bracelet design because the clasp takes a lot of room which leaves little for the actual design area. Also we need to take into consideration the wear and tear on a bracelet is much higher therefore what we can use in a necklace or earrings may not translate into a bracelet. due to its fragility.
Each part of the suite is a separate design exercise for me. So often I see designer necklaces and the earrings are almost an after thought with a matching bead plonked onto a ear wire with little consideration given to actual earring design, the intent just being on matching the necklace. Pretty uninspiring stuff most of the time.
So I spent all week literally 3-4 hours a day constructing a bracelet only to have it fail on pretty much all accounts: design, boldness and beauty. About 20 hours of unpaid work.
So as I am nursing my martini and looking at the mess at my table, I am heartened by the fact that I am easily superseded in persistence. I was at a jewellery show a couple of years ago and I was looking at seed pearl strands, the inspiration for Thousand Kisses.

Lx Thousand Kisses Seed Pearl  Necklace                    Doris Duke Cartier Seed Pearl Necklace

The gentlemen was raving how he supplied these teeny tiny pearls to Cartier which took 25 years to complete a hank of naturally creamy yellow pearls. I was also drawn to Kallis pearls 'Versatility Strand" necklace which took 5 years to complete by searching through $100 million worth of pearls to find 58 perfectly round with a pink hue 15mm south sea pearls.

                                 Kailis Pearls 'Versatility Necklace'

So I am ending the week channeling Einstein, I now know 500 ways not to create a bracelet. Are jewellery designers mad, no, but I think Pearlers are....

Types of Pearls

Peals have been around for ever and it is because they are versatile and timeless. Today there are many different types of pearls.

We use three types of pearls here, for details on the differences click on the links.

Swarovski

Freshwater

Akoya

No pearl collection can be too large but we recommend the following strands:

- one classic akoya strand princess length

- two swarovski strands, one cream, one coloured princess length

- one opera length strand in swarovski pearl

Ten ways to wear pearls

1. Classic Single Strand
Use your finest akoya strand or go for boldness with Swarovski pearls. A classic length for a pearl necklace is about 18 inches; at this length it looks great with most necklines and is timelessly chic.

2. Classic triple strand
More impact than a single strand, either use a triple strand or 3 strands of the same size.

3. Layering large pearls
Get a rich, layered look by wearing multiple strands of large pearls. Using the same colour intensifies the look.
